About Us
FOR PLAY SPORTS was incorporated with the purpose of bringing to market unique sports related products created by its founder, Russ Held. Our name is meant to signify products for “active participation”. How the P2 boat concept came to be we think is an interesting story.
For those not familiar with the area, Northern Michigan is home to many small lakes. One sunny Saturday several years ago while enjoying a lakeside lunch of pizza and Diet Coke, Russ noticed how the youngsters visited with their friends, much like he used to do as an adolescent via bicycle on the front streets, but by way of small-motorized rubber rafts on the waterside of the houses.
In addition, out in the middle of the lake was a fixed platform from which people would dive and swim. From this he imagined a small stable craft that could serve both recreational purposes; a powered 2-person maneuverable boat, similar it that respect to the rubber rafts, yet more comfortable for lounging in the sun and close to the water for easy entrance and exit. Russ also wanted a sturdy boat to withstand routine hits or bumps and have the ability to be run aground without fear of damage.
The original P2 satisfied these criteria with the polyethylene pontoons and catamaran like trampoline surface. By adding a few options such as a cooler and bimini top, it became a comfortable self-sufficient day cruiser for two.
However, the story does not end there. As Russ traveled around showing the P2 it became apparent through customer comments such as “If it had a way for me to stand, it would be great for river fishing”, that all of the potential for the concept had not yet been realized. Thus was born the P2 Sport. By replacing the trampoline with a hard deck and swivel seats it became practical for fishing or waterfowl hunting. First buzz for the P2 Sport has been very positive.
To
date the P2 family of boats is the largest endeavor we have undertaken.
It has been an exciting trip from conception to finished product. We look
